Bethlehem, Pa., (July 29, 2009) - Dennis Costello, General Manager of the Historic Hotel Bethlehem is pleased to announce that the hotel has received a perfect score for “Historic Experience” from F & G Hospitality, Inc. a firm commissioned by Historic Hotel’s of America as part of their brand assurance program.
In the areas of; employee awareness and historic elements the hotel was unsurpassed and scored 100%, and in the area of “guest experience”, the hotel attained a near perfect score of 97%. “We spend a great deal of time, effort and expense in training every associate. Every one who works here can tell you the history of the hotel and the town, no matter their position in the hotel,” says Costello. The hotel made a unique investment more than two years ago when they hired a full-time historian to not only assist in training their employees, but to also impart that history to guests and visitors. “Out of the 220 historic hotels of America, very few have their own historian, we feel very fortunate to be one of them. In return, our guests walk away with a greater sense of what a unique and exceptional place Bethlehem is” says Costello.
Hotel Historian, Natalie Bock has given presentations on everything from Moravian Death Practices for the Pennsylvania State Coroners, to Moravian Christmas Traditions for Moravian Academy second graders. She most recently presented the “History of Chocolate” to over 500 Questers at their statewide convention. “Bethlehem is steeped in fascinating history, we try to convey this to our guests by giving them a sense of time travel, but with modern amenities and technology” says Ms. Bock. The hotel lobby of today is almost identical to the lobby of the 1920’s, Palladian windows, marble staircases, terrazzo and mosaic flooring even the original brass mail chute have all been painstakingly restored, when a guest comes down for morning coffee or tea, they can enjoy complimentary Moravian Sugar cake, a Bethlehem recipe that dates back to the 1700’’s. The music varies from classical to Jazz, all taking you back to a bygone era.
The hotel has recently completed their “Hall of History” a display for not only hotel guests but also the general public. It spans the history of the Bethlehem Hotel Corporation, as well as the history of the hotel’s predecessor, The Eagle Hotel, which dates it founding to 1794. “When I train staff, I tell them that George Washington was in office when the first structure was built – it gives them an idea of the age and era” says Ms. Bock. Historically, the site dates back to 1741, when the first settlers came the Bethlehem and built the Moravian’s “First House” razed in 1823 to make way for the hotel’s stable.
The Historic Hotel Bethlehem’s “Hall of History” is permanently displayed in the hotel’s lower lobby and is open to the public for viewing.
